Beni Ouarain Floor Cushions

Beni Ouarain floor cushions

Beni Ouarain floor cushions are hugely popular these days, and we don’t think that’s surprising! They are beautiful! The floor cushions have a distinctive geometric pattern, and often consist of more neutral colours like ivory white and black. But despite that, these hand-woven Beni Ouarain floor cushions are a real eye-catcher in the home.

A Beni Ouarain Kilim with a unique story

The cushions are named after a village called ‘Beni Ouarain’ in the Mid-Atlas Mountains. In most cases, the floor cushions are made from a vintage berber rug. This makes each Beni Ouarain floor cushion unique and tells a story about the traditions and culture of the Berber community. By mixing wool, cotton and years of experience, the most beautiful kilims come to life.

How is a floor cushion made?

Within the Beni Ouarain tribe, the tradition of rug weaving is passed down from mothers to daughters. Using looms, these women make rugs that are sometimes more than 2 metres wide and 3.5 metres long. The weaving of such a rug can take more than a month and can contain more than a million knots. After weaving, the rug is washed with natural soap and dried in the sun, resulting in a soft texture. After this, the rugs are cut into floor cushion sizes, and are sewn together by hand.
